How does this work?
There are many ways to search the collections of the Freedom Archives. Below is a brief guide that will help you conduct effective searches. Note, anytime you search for anything in the Freedom Archives, the first results that appear will be our digitized items. Information for items that have yet to be scanned or yet to be digitized can still be viewed, but only by clicking on the show link that will display the hidden (non-digitized) items. If you are interested in accessing these non-digitized materials, please email info@freedomarchives.org.
Exploring the Collections without the Search Bar
Under the heading Browse By Collection, you’ll notice most of the Freedom Archives’ major collections. These collections have an image as well as a short description of what you’ll find in that collection. Click on that image to instantly explore that specific collection.
Basic Searching
You can always type what you’re looking for into the search bar. Certain searches may generate hundreds of results, so sometimes it will help to use quotation marks to help narrow down your results. For instance, searching for the phrase Black Liberation will generate all of our holdings that contain the words Black and Liberation, while searching for “Black Liberation” (in quotation marks) will only generate our records that have those two words next to each other.
Advanced Searching
The Freedom Archives search site also understands Boolean search logic, specifcally AND/+, NOT/-, and OR operators. Click on this link for a brief tutorial on how to use Boolean search logic. Our search function also understands “fuzzy searches.” Fuzzy searches utilize the (*) and will find matches even when users misspell words or enter in only partial words for the search. For example, searching for liber* will produce results for liberation/liberate/liberates/etc.
Keyword Searches
You’ll notice that under the heading KEYWORDS, there are a number of words, phrases or names that describe content. Sometimes these are also called “tags.” Clicking on these words is essentially the same as conducting a basic search.
Welcome to the Freedom Archives' Digital Search Engine.The Freedom Archives contains over 12,000 hours of audio and video recordings which date from the late-1960s to the mid-90s and chronicle the progressive history of the Bay Area, the United States, and international movements. We are also in the process of scanning and uploading thousands of historical documents which enrich our media holdings. Our collection includes weekly news, poetry, music programs; in-depth interviews and reports on social and cultural issues; numerous voices from behind prison walls; diverse activists; and pamphlets, journals and other materials from many radical organizations and movements.

Tricontinental

This collection contains issues of Tricontinental, founded in 1967 by the Organization of Solidarity with the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL) following the first Tricontinental conference. These periodicals, published in Havana, Cuba, cover a wide range of topics, from national liberation movements to the capitalistic exploitation of natural resources in various countries. The goal of this publication is to expose imperialistic policies and create international solidarity with leftist political movements. These articles focus on the struggles of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and include interviews with revolutionaries, cultural pieces such as poetry, analysis, and more.

"Ho Chi Minh: There is Nothing More Precious than Independence and Freedom" commemorates the loss of Ho Chi Minh and the impact his death has on revolutionaries throughout the world. Included are his writings and poems concerning the liberation struggle. "Peru: the Earthquake Generation" details the rise of a new type of military government, the Junta in Peru, an their efforts to overthrow the pro U.S. reformist government. "Puerto Rico: the Origins of its Rebellion" analyzes the roots of the revolutionary spirit in Puerto Rico, from the overthrow of Spanish rule to the contemporary struggle with U.S. imperialistic forces. "Sudan: Force for the Future" exposes the counterrevolutionary plots of imperialist forces attempting to overthrow the president of the Sudanese Revolutionary Council, General Gaafar El Numeiry. These plots were discovered by the Sudan Secret Service. "Honduras-Salvador" analyzes the "football war", a 4 day undeclared war that sparked from land disagreements between Salvadorian and Honduran oligarchies. This article highlights the similarities between the two countries, single-crop agrarian economies and U.S. imperialistic presence, both catalysts for the resulting war. "Mozambique: for Its Just National Liberation" announcement by FRELIMO at their first congress concerning the determination of FRELIMO in overthrowing Portuguese colonial forces in order to achieve national liberation. Briefly details the brutal tactics of Portuguese forces and growing intensification of the armed struggle.

"The Vietnamese Homeland Unified and Socialist" transcript of speech given by Le Duan, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Viet Nam Worker's Party, at the first session of the joint National Assembly of Viet Nam. Le Duan reports on the Vietnamese people's task of wiping out the scars of imperialist aggression in order to build a better society. "Bolivia's Outlet to the Sea: An Imperialist Way Out" reviews the history of The War of the Pacific and its implications in the contemporary politics of Bolivia, Chile and Peru. This article argues that Bolivia's desire to recover its outlet to the sea is backed by U.S. imperialistic designs. "NATO and South Africa" interview with the honorary Secretary of the British Apartheid Movement, Abdul S. Minty. Minty discusses relations between South Africa and western powers and the role of South Africa in NATO's plans. "Propaganda and Advertising: Two Sides of the Same Coin" analyzes the relationship between imperialist government, multinational enterprises, salesmen, scientists, the system's ideologues, and the mass media in the manipulation of consciences and bourgeois lifestyles. According to this article, these relationships invalidates arguments of journalistic neutrality. "East Timor: FRETILIN Speaks" statement from Abilio Araujo where he speaks about the heroic struggle the Timorese people are waging against the occupation troops of the Indonesian fascist regime. Araujo is a member of the National Department of Political Orientation and the Political-Military and Executive Committee of the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor and is also the Minister of Economic and Social Affairs of the Government of East Timor. "Puerto Rico: Crisis and Repression" talk given by leaders of the Puerto Rican Socialist Party, Carlos Gallisa and Alberto Perez, concerning the political and social situation in Puerto Rico, colony of United States imperialism. "Angola: An End to the Mercenaries' Myth" excerpt from a book written by Raul Valdes Vivo. This story shares the perspectives of a group of mercenaries who carried out attacks against natives with impunity. In Angola these mercenaries faced resistance from the Angolan people both on a field of battle or in the courts.

"Ecuador: The Church Must Adapt Itself to the Times" analyzes the transition of churches in Ecuador from being pawns of political reaction and domination to radical forces challenging traditional hierarchies and the capitalistic system. "Chile: The Copper Conspiracy" exposes the monopoly on the Chilean copper industry by U.S. imperialistic forces as a "copper plot" aimed at destroying Chile's economy. This international conspiracy was dismantled when Salvador Allende was elected to office. "Nguyen Duc Thuan: Hero of the 'Tiger Cages'" interview with Nguyen Duc Thuan, Secretary-General of the Federation of Vietnamese Trade Unions, who was imprisoned in a tiger cage for 8 years. This method of imprisonment was established by the Saigon regime, backed by U.S. force, to inflict physical and psychological torture on patriots. "Malawi: Neo-colonial State" argues that despite gaining independence from British rule, Malawi is subject to neo-colonial economic and political policies due to its proximity to racist colonial regimes like South Africa, Rhodesia, Mozambique and Angola. "Death, Its Name is Stroessner" historical overview of Paraguay leading up to the military coup in 1954 of General Alfredo Stroessner. Stroessner instituted a military police dictatorship sympathetic to U.S. imperialism which has resulted in the forced exile of Paraguayans. Included is a statement favoring the overthrow of the fascist dictatorship. "Genocide in Angola" exposes the Portuguese tactics of spreading chemical products, defoliants and herbicides, throughout the liberated regions of Angola, poisoning rivers and marshes. "Africa: For Total Independence" details the systemic radicalization of revolutionary struggle in Africa in response to Western imperialist coercion tactics. Appeal for solidarity with Africa.

"Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara: Message to the Tricontinental" Special Supplement Edition Article by Ernesto Che Guevara entitled "Create Two, Three... Many Vietnams -- That is the Watchword" links international revolutionary movements against U.S. imperialism. Guevara was among the first collaborators of Tricontinental. His article was published before the first publication of the magazine in order to spread this message to the peoples of the world.

"The Caribbean Today" explores the diverse cultures found in the Caribbean, where the people share a common heritage, a united destiny and a unique civilization. "The Undeniable Nation" interview with Juan Mari Bras, leader of the independence movement and the Puerto Rican Left. Bras highlights the relationship and influence between Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. He also discusses the issue of Puerto Rican nationality and citizenship separate from U.S. citizenship. "A Dead End Street" Discusses the history of occupations and invasions of Haiti that have worsened the social and political crises, including the most recent U.S. intervention in 2004 in order to ensure "democracy". "The Caribbean: Economy and Integration" analyzes the possible economic integration of the Caribbean to the global economy where it would have to compete with northern resources. Historically, Caribbean integration has been a struggle for independence and the maintenance of identity. This article argues that the economic community must recognize the conditions peculiar to the Caribbean when incorporating the the global exchange. Emphasis must be placed on development rather than the supplier of resources concept. "Mandela's Ideal" discusses Mandela's fight for democracy and Cuban solidarity on the 10 year anniversary of democracy in South Africa. "A Place of Human Hope" Thabo Mbeki's, president elect of the Republic of South Africa, speech that accounts for the past 10 years of democracy in South Africa and the challenges that lie ahead. "The Writer of Portuguese-Speaking Africa and the Future" reflection of the multiple situations that Portuguese speaking Africans face when writing with an imposed language and navigating the public and publishing houses. "From Israel the Plan, From US the Image" interview with Dr. Jehad K. Suleiman Rashid, coordinator of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine in Europe, where he discusses the United State's support of Israel. "In the Net of Militarization" analyzes the military industry as one of the most lucrative businesses in the world and the implications of militarization in South America. "Looking Back: The Eisenhower Administration and the Guatemala of Jacobo Arbenz" reflections on the communist revolution in Guatemala and President Eisenhower's decision to establish the covert operation of PBSUCCESS that overthrew Jacobo Arbenz's presidency. "Yeye's Victory" excerpt from the prologue of Haydee Santamaria's first biography. "War Drums and Elections" discusses George W. Bush's measures against Cuba in 2006 in an attempt to make Cuba an American neo-colony. "The Teheran Conference" overview of the Tehran conference that situates The Tehran Declaration's impact on Iran. Despite claiming to "respect the freedom and tolerance of all nations" US policies and aggressive military actions in Iran and Palestine say otherwise.

"Viet-Nam: Nixon's Maneuvers" is an update from Mme Nguyen Thi Binh, a leader of the South Viet Nam revolutionary front, on the continuing struggle against United States aggression. "The Road of the Honduran Revolution" is a document from the Communist Party of Honduras detailing the rise of the military regime and North American imperialist control. It reports on the state of the Honduran working class and puts forth a set of revolutionary principles and policies. "Israel: Imperialist Mission in Africa" reports on Israel's little known role as a representative of US imperialist interests in Africa. A large aspect of this dynamic is Israel's "foreign aid" program, which exports military and police tactics designed to quell insurgency and prop up neocolonial governments to over 15 African countries. "Misinformation, an Imperialist Industry" exposes the massive web of corporate and imperialist forces that underpins news media in Latin America and worldwide. As the primary vessel for information about the world for most people, the news industry holds a tremendous amount of power; the author discusses the ways this power has been used to maintain the status quo and silence opposition. "Eritrea: Arms Against Oppression" summarizes the status of the Eritrean Liberation Front in its struggle against Ethiopian oppression. "The Arabian Gulf: Neocolonialism or Revolution" is an interview with a spokesman from the People's Front for the Liberation of the Occupied Arabian Gulf. It provides historical context for the people's struggle against colonial and oil interests and reports on recent offensives from the Peoples Liberation Army. "USA: the CIA's Search for Brains" exposes the indelible influence of corporate and military interests in every aspect of American universities. This partnership between educational institutions and the United States government involves not only the development of counterinsurgency technologies and strategies, but also the creation of a culture that rejects radical thought and perpetuates an imperialist way of life. "Southern Yemen: the Colonial Inheritance" discusses the challenges facing Southern Yemen two years into their independence and the government's strategy for ridding themselves of colonial vestiges.
